Permanent Eyelid Surgery
Of all the features of the face, the eyes say the most about us and are most closely linked with our visual identity. Unfortunately, the eyes are often the first area of the face to show signs of aging. Aging of the eyelids can lead to the ‘tired’ appearance, often associated with middle age. The eyes can become dull, lose their brightness and expression and become droopy in appearance.
Permanent eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can help to reverse the effects of aging.
What happens to eyelids as they age?
As the body ages, the eyelid skin detaches from the eyelid fold causing the surrounding lid skin to become loose. This is often mistaken for ‘excess skin’ but it is actually a result of the skin no longer being held in place. As a result, the eyes can appear saggy and lifeless.
How permanent eyelid surgery works: The Tasal Fixation Technique
Dr Mendelson’s permanent eyelid surgery procedure – the Tarsal Fixation Technique - focuses on correcting the internal structure of the lid, not the skin itself. In simple terms, the underlying support layer of the eyelid is re-attached to its original position and the eyelid regains its youthful structure and appearance. The restored eyelid fold is achieved without removal of any skin and heals naturally without scarring.
How is this technique different?
Older, out-dated techniques, which are still widely performed, often involve pulling the skin more tightly and removing the ‘excess’ skin. Not only can this lead to scarring and distortion, it does not address the cause of the problem and so won’t lead to a lasting rejuvenation, it is therefore not permanent surgery.
Dr Mendelson’s permanent eyelid surgery technique does not involve the skin being pulled or stretched. The result is a natural looking, permanent result.
Dr Mendelson has been performing the Tarsal Fixation permanent eyelid surgery technique for over twenty years and is a global leader in the field.
The procedure
Permanent eyelid surgery takes just an hour in day surgery and is virtually painless. It requires only a small incision in the eyelid fold which leads to slight swelling (equivalent to a minor allergy). Within four weeks, all signs of surgery are undetectable, even when the eyes are closed.
