Facial Augmentation
Facial Augmentation. Enhancing bone structure
Having ‘good bones’ is not only the key to a beautifully shaped face, but it is also important in slowing the rate at which facial ageing occurs. We all know people who have a lovely bone structure and seem to age better than others around them.
Unfortunately, we lose bone mass as we age and so for most people - especially those without a naturally good bone structure - this loss of facial structure is a major factor in their facial ageing. In fact, loss of bone mass is increasingly being recognised as one of
the key contributors to facial ageing.
Most faces have at least some area where the underlying skeleton is naturally poorly developed and would benefit from small, carefully placed amounts of augmentation (building up) of the bone.
Augmentation has become a valuable part of most anti-ageing procedures, where it can restore the rounded contours and pleasing angles of a younger face, and it can also be used on people of any age to transform a plain, ordinary face to a more attractive and contoured appearance.
The Importance of Hydroxyapatite
Dr Mendelson uses hydroxyapatite for facial augmentation. This is a naturally occurring product derived from coral which has been extensively used in surgery for many years. Granules of hydroxyapatite are mixed to a putty like consistency, so they can be moulded to the size and shape required for each patient and then applied to the bone. This provides a safe and lasting result which is based exactly on the individual needs of each patient.
It is particularly effective on the temple and outer brow, where it improves the appearance of the eyes and upper lids, and for building up the jaw, chin or cheek area. Augmentation with hydroxyapatite can be performed alone, in conjunction with other rejuvenation surgery or to refresh the appearance of surgery performed years ago. It does not create post-surgical bruising and recovery is less than a week.
